Donna is Nakoda-Sioux French Métis from Lac St Anne and St Albert, Alberta on her father’s side, and English on her mother’s side. She is recognized as an elder by her Métis community, and Métis Nation BC.
She has two grown children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Donna did not grow up knowing her culture. In fact, most of her life she denied she was indigenous due to the stigma of being an “Indian”.
It has been a significant learning experience for her to becoming a proud Métis woman. As a result, she encourages people to learn their culture as it builds our identity and self esteem. Knowing our culture helps us better understand ourselves and others and to be respectfully curious about other cultures rather than judgemental and critical.
As an active member of the community, some of her recent volunteer pursuits has been as chair of a community school society, member of Patient Voices Network, Xyolhemeylh Elder’s advisory counsel, Chilliwack, Fraser Valley and Waycea Métis Associations as well as Metis Nation BC, Chilliwack Healthier Communities, Child and Youth Committees’.
Donna has worked as an independent contractor for the indigenous stream of Gambling Support BC since 2016 as an indigenous Prevention and Community Engagement Provider.
She connects and builds relationships with communities while bringing an awareness about the concerns related to gambling, screentime, as well as indigenous focused, spiritually based, land-based workshops such as the Seven Scared Teachings and Metis Jigging and Cultural Awareness.
Some of her past work-related positions has been with MCFD, Shuswap Nation Tribal Counsel, Band Social Worker, Interior Health Doula Liaison, Care Aide, Community Living BC Facilitator.
Donna’s passion is in providing health related topics that help people bring balance to their lives.
As a Living works certified trainer Donna also provides safeTALK and ASIST suicide prevention workshops.
Donna holds a Registered Social Worker designation. Formal educational achievements for Donna is a Bachelor of Social Work with a Child Welfare Specialization. She also has a Community and School Support Certificate with a focus on individuals with special needs and a Human Service Diploma.
