This land-based learning was inclusive to families, schools and community organizations.
Medicine Wheel Garden at Metis House
The newly created Medicine Wheel Garden at Metis House was inspired by Indigenous teachings from the prairies.
Sometimes known as the Sacred Hoop, it has been used by generations for health and healing during difficult times.
It embodies the Four Directions as well as Father Sky, Mother Earth, and the Spirit Tree, all of which symbolizes the dimensions of health, healing and living life in balance.
Especially important during this time of reconciliation, the medicine wheel will be a teaching tool for young and old alike. After school programs will be nurtured by a newly formed Medicine Wheel Garden Club.
Coordinators and volunteers helped facilitate programming, scheduling guest Elders and compiling a video library with the purpose of re-introducing land-based learning into our busy lives.
The Medicine Wheel Garden Club met at Metis House and worked towards self-sustainability by accepting donations, with activities such as hosting a yearly plant sale and had periodic outdoor lunches with guest speakers.
The Medicine Wheel Garden will inspire story-telling and act as a bridge between generations.
